1930s Darwin
Darwin is a strategically vital population centre in Northern Australia. This was no less true in the early 20th century. Under Commonwealth control, the Northern Territory was a strategic outpost of great military and logistical value.
To attract public servants and their families to the Top End, housing appropriate to the climate was required. Recruited from South East Asia, architect Beni Burnett headed up a team of pioneering draftsmen, architects and builders to produce some of the most iconic Darwin houses and buildings.
The Myilly Point Heritage Precinct is home to four of these houses.
Run by the National Trust of Australia (NT) this pocket of history is open to the public to experience. You will learn not only about the history of the precinct and Tropical Architecture, but about the challenges and opportunities Darwin faced along the way.
