Step into a lush rainforest in this vibrant, interactive children's theatre experience.
Birmba follows three cockatoos – Kukubaka the chatterbox, Junkurrji the strong protector and Junkaji, the wise guide – as they navigate a changing world through connection, courage and care for Country.
Grounded in Kuku Yalanji language and cultural knowledge, this interactive theatre experience invites audiences to join the journey through voice, rhythm and imagination. As the birds work together to protect their rainforest jawun (friends), young audiences are encouraged to step in, respond and help guide the story forward.
Blending storytelling, original music and movement, Birmba creates a rich and engaging experience for children and families alike. Developed through a culturally led process alongside Elders and community, the work offers a meaningful and accessible way to experience First Nations storytelling – inviting audiences to listen deeply, move together and share in the responsibility of caring for Country.
Whilst Birmba carries Kuku Yalanji language, stories and spirit, the creators respectfully acknowledge the Larrakia people as the Traditional Custodians and first language holders of the lands and waters of the Darwin region where this story is being shared.
