Pine Creek
The town of Pine Creek is located about 90 kilometres north of Katherine at the junction of the Stuart and Kakadu Highways.
Pine Creek is a small town with a remarkably rich and layered history. Established during the gold rush of the 1870s, it quickly became a bustling hub for prospectors seeking fortune, leaving behind a legacy still visible in its heritage buildings and mining relics.
The town also played a significant role during the construction of the Overland Telegraph Line and later the North Australia Railway, cementing its place in Australia’s development. Beyond its colonial past, Pine Creek sits on land with deep cultural significance to the Wagiman people, whose connection to the area stretches back thousands of years. Today, Pine Creek blends these stories into a unique outback character, offering visitors a glimpse into both its pioneering spirit and enduring Indigenous heritage.
