Darwin Festival kicks off in one week and there’s a huge program of events planned to take over the city from 5-22 August 2021. One of the highlights of the Festival each year is its featuring of artists from the NT, and 2021 is no exception with a huge line-up of music, theatre, dance, cabaret and visual arts events starring our very own Territory talent.
Words by: Sue Moffitt 2021I was so excited to get tourism vouchers in the 2nd round. I was only on the waiting list and thought I would miss out. After some research Ken and I decided to treat ourselves to a weekend away, not just an ordinary weekend spent “down the track” or in one of Darwin’s staycations, but to go somewhere that we would never have thought of going.
Take a comfortable & relaxing 1 hour 20-minute flight with Airnorth from Darwin to Nhulunbuy. What awaits is an exciting, fun, off the beaten track, 4WD adventure to Bawaka, which means ‘A Known Heaven’, located 60km south of the community of Yirrkala. The drive is on a great four-wheel drive track of mainly soft sand, that comes out along the ocean. The very experienced and knowledgeable guide, Rungbar (otherwise known as Randy), shows off his land, the fishing, wildlife, beauty, traditional ways and history. The scenery is breathtaking, just being there will feel as though the world has been lifted from your shoulders.
