What is there to see and do in Darwin?
There is plenty to do and see around town or simply relax, recharge the batteries and enjoy the holiday atmosphere. There is a huge focus on outdoor activities – eating, drinking, shopping, movie-going, sailing and visiting the markets. You can eat laksa on the beach at the sunset markets, catch a band at one of many live music venues, cruise the harbour at sunset or relax in a deckchair watching a movie on the big screen under a canopy of stars.

What is there to see and do in Top End?
The Top End of the Northern Territory is known for its tropical weather, crocodiles, rich Aboriginal culture, great fishing, national parks and laid-back lifestyle. It is home to an eclectic mix of cultures whose outdoor lifestyle is complemented by brilliant sunsets, fantastic fishing and a colourful calendar of outdoor events. Darwin is the Northern Territory’s multicultural capital, famed for its markets and festivals, Asian cuisine and beautiful natural harbour. It is also the perfect base from which to explore the natural treasures of World Heritage-Listed Kakadu and Litchfield National Parks as well as the Tiwi Islands, Nitmiluk National Park and Arnhem Land.
How long does it take to drive to the National Parks and should I drive there in one day or take a tour?
The Northern Territory is vast. Occupying about one sixth of Australia's total land mass, its boundaries encompass a variety of contrasting landscapes and experiences, best tackled by exploring a few key destinations - each with their own distinct personality, we urge you to experience the wonders of our region.

Kakadu National Park:
- Distance: Approximately 250 km from Darwin.
- Driving Time: Approximately 3 to 4 hours, depending on road conditions and stops.
Litchfield National Park:
- Distance: About 100 km from Darwin.
- Driving Time: Approximately 1.5 to 2 hours.
Nitmiluk National Park (Katherine Gorge):
- Distance: About 320 km from Darwin.
- Driving Time: Approximately 3.5 to 4.5 hours.
Elsey National Park:
- Distance: About 380 km from Darwin, near Mataranka.
- Driving Time: Approximately 4 to 5 hours.
For summary, Litchfield National Park is Ideal for a one-day self-drive. While Kakadu, Nitmiluk, and Elsey National Parks are more enjoyable with an overnight stay. If you would rather sit back and enjoy the sites of our beautiful landscapes why not jump on a tour?

How do I know what is accessible by road in the Top End during the year?
The Top End has two seasons; The Dry Season (May to October) and a Tropical Summer (November to April). The Dry season brings lower humidity levels, making it the perfect weather for outdoor activities and exploring the many attractions of the Top End region. The Tropical Summer brings monsoonal rains during late afternoon or overnight. During this period flooding can occur which can restrict access to some parts of the region. While weather conditions at this time of year can restrict travel to some areas, the Wet season is a stunning time to see the Top End. Waterfalls tumble, skies host incredible light shows and the landscape turns a lush green.
Tours and attractions operate year-round within the Top End. However, due to restricted road access, some destinations can close seasonally between December and May.
How do I know when to plan my camping trip to the Top End?
Camping through our Dry Season is the perfect time to get back to nature. The Top End has many caravan park and bush campsite available to set up camp. Don’t forget to pack plenty of blankets as the nights can get quite cold.
Does an entry permit into Kakadu National Park cover my camping?
From 3 April 2023, visitors to the Northern Territory will need a park pass to visit most national parks and reserves.

How can I be croc wise in the Top End?
By taking a few precautions you can share their environment without danger:
- Never stand on riverbanks or clean fish by the water’s edge and always be aware of your surroundings while near the water
- Heed all warning signs and take care when swimming or wading in any Territory waterways.
- Crocodiles can make their way inland a surprising distance, and with their current rise in population, it should never be assumed that an area is free of them.
What else can I do to be croc wise?
When is the best time to go fishing?
Fishing in the Northern Territory is excellent all year round and while barramundi are most active from March to May, anglers can fish successfully at any time for a range of species. The northern regions of the Territory are also home to an array of other great sport and reef fish, including giant trevally (GT), queenfish, Spanish mackerel, cobia, black jewfish, golden snapper, red emperor, coral trout, marlin and sailfish.

What do I need to know about fishing in the Top End?
Not really sure what your doing when it comes to fishing? No need to stress! All our friendly fishing operators are all knowledgeable about the do’s and don’ts of fishing.
No experience is required when learning on the job can be so much fun! If you’re a bit more experienced why not hire a boat, stay at a remote fishing lodge or charter a mothership – every type of angler and every type of fishing experience is catered for in the Northern Territory.

Can I make a conference or event booking through Tourism Top End?
Looking or planning to host an event or conference in the Top End and need some help planning activities? Tourism Top End have created a program ‘Darwin Welcomes Delegates’. The program connects delegates with local businesses who provide delegate specific products including special offers, special gift or bonus for purchase. The program is a customer service initiative which aims to improve the delegate experience in the Top End and make delegates feel special. Want more information?

Does the Visitor Information Centre make complete travel itinerary bookings?
The Tourism Top End Visitor Information Centre is the best place to start your Top End experience. We offer a Free booking service for all your tours, attractions, accommodation and vehicle hire with unlimited kilometres. Our friendly and knowledgeable consultants can help you create an itinerary for your trip that best suits your budget and timeframe.
Can I make changes or cancellations online?
If you are needing to make any changes or cancel your booking please phone through to Tourism Top End on 1300 138 886 and our friendly staff will be happy to assist. Don’t forget to ask if any cancellation fees will apply.
Do I get a refund if I cancel the tour?
Cancellation fees can apply this can be checked with our friendly consultants. Please note that all operators will have different cancelations policies. You can also refer to Tourism Top End’s terms and conditions.
What deposits or up-front payments do you require?
A 30% deposit is required on booking and full payment is required to secure the booking. Please be aware that for certain bookings full payment is required up front. This can be confirmed with your consultant before payment is processed.
How long should I book in advance?
During our Dry Season May – October the Top End’s tours, attractions and accommodation can often book out. We would recommend booking close to the beginning of the year or as soon as possible to avoid missing out.
What type of cards do you accept? Do you have a card fee?
We accept the following cards; Visa, Mastercard and China Union Pay. Please be aware that we have a 1.5% credit card fee. If you would like to avoid this fee contact our friendly staff on 1300 138 886 to see if a bank transfer is possible.
Can I make a bank transfer?
If you would like to make a bank transfer that is no problem. We just ask that we receive full payment 6 week in advance. If you would like to discuss please contact our friendly staff at the Visitor Information centre on 1300 138 886
Do you require all passenger names and contact details of tour group?
We require you to provide all passenger names, ages, medical and dietary requirements, we also require pick-up and drop off points. This information is then passed onto the tour company you have been booked onto. This is so they can make sure that they can cater to your needs through-out the tour.
Can I make a Car hire booking online?
If you would like to book a car jump onto our car hire page. There you will find a form that can be completed and one of our friendly staff will send through a quote. If you have any questions contact the Visitor Information centre on 1300 138 886 and they will be able to answer any questions you may have.
What type of vehicles can I book?
We have a large range of vehicles for hire these include 2WD and 4WD’s, camper trailer hire, 4WD camper van hire, camper van hire, motorhome hire, luxury vehicle hire, coach hire, mini bus hire. We can also book one-way rentals to Alice Springs, Kununurra & Broome, coach transfers and airport shuttle service. Don’t forget to ask about our unlimited kilometres.
Do I need an international drivers licence to hire a car if I am not from Australia?
In order to hire a vehicle you must hold a valid current Australian, New Zealand, International or overseas drivers licence and have held that licence for a minimum of 12 months. Overseas licences that are not easily identifiable as a drivers licence must be accompanied by an International Licence or certified English translation. You must also hold a valid credit card, and be over 21 years old.
Can I use my own insurance cover and loyalty card provider when booking car hire?
With all our vehicle bookings insurance can be added however, if you would like to have your own cover please just inform us when booking. That we can let the rental company know you will be providing your own cover.
Do I need to give my flight details when I make a booking?
By providing us with your flight details we are able to pass them onto your accommodation or car rental provider. This will help them so they are aware of your arrival time and in case of any flight delays.
I’m coming into Darwin on a cruise ship. Can I make a booking online?
Bookings can be made online or calling our friendly staff at the Visitor Information centre on 1300 138 886. Just remember when making a booking to check the pick-up and drop-off times to make sure that they a line with the arrive and departure of your ship. The Information Centre may also have tours on offer for the day you arrive.

How far is the Airport from Darwin CBD?
It will take around 20 minutes from the Darwin CBD to the Airport. However always allow at least half-an-hour in case of unexpected delays.
My flight arrives at around midnight – is it easy to get into town at that time of the morning?
Most of Darwin flights arrive in the early hours of the morning. Upon arrive there is a shuttle service that meets every flight or can be booked in advance there is also a taxi rank. If you have booked a vehicle this can also be picked up from the airport if arranged ahead of time.
Can I cycle around Darwin?
There are many cycle paths around Darwin CBD and surrounding suburbs.
